GENERAL INFORMATION

Ginkgo biloba can grow to be a huge, bold-textured and an urban-tolerant shade tree. The species form usually matures at about 24m tall by 18m wide under urban conditions, but specimen trees in open areas can get much larger. This is also one of the oldest trees still living on Earth, and a deciduous gymnosperm by botanical classification. Some scientists now believe that in China they were found trees which are more than 2500 years old.

CONCLUSIONS VS. DESIGN

Ginkgo is a young tree and still has to grow, so we should not prevent this process with our house. moreover, we can’t be sure about the space it is going to need for the future. Because of that reason the structure should not really on the trunk or the branches, which are still young enough and probably fragile. This means that we could experiment with a vertical space, which can step on the ground and support itself without having support from the tree. That kind of structure has to be public, because of the park, which is a public space. It has to provoke public interest, so the space need to be active – for fun and relaxation. The logical connection between the artificial structure and the tree can be the natural vertical element – the trunk. Because of the vertical structure and the natural need to go up, the space needs a climbing grid. By using technologies we could bring people back in the park, giving them an option to be part of the modern society, but also close to the nature. The structure could be a mix of technology, architecture and natural elements, creating symbiosis with ginkgo.

Ginkgo House

December 5th, 2009 jacek.markusiewicz@iaac.net Posted in Ander Gortazar Balerdi, Jacek Markusiewicz | No Comments »

The ginkgo man picks up the gingko fruits and brings them to Collserola, “if everybody did the same, we’d had more trees in Barcelona” he says. In a way, he uses our ginkgo to help Ginkgo, an action that, if it was repeted, would follow the ginkgo’s pattern: one becomes two, two becomes four and so on.

anderjacekwiz03

So how can we help him achieving his objective? Could we build him a tribute in the ginkgo so that he can use it as its place? A house, a tribune, a game, a class, a monument?

The house would be a place to be, to read, to rest, to sleep. But also a bench to sit, to speak, to breath, to think. A house for the ginkgo man and for children, a reference that will remind the youngest generations the need of taking care nature.

The bicycle wheel, the most simple tensagrity system, is the image that shows the concept of the structure.

The moebius strip represents the idea of the house: exterior becomes interior and vice versa. A solid based in the moebius strip enables to have a dynamic structure, a place to sit and to take cover. This structure can be easily made by a series of sections, that go from vertical to horizontal. In addition, a perforation in the structure allows us to join the covered space with the exterior one.
